The island of Rab is rightly referred to as the pioneer of naturism on the Adriatic. The month of August 1936 is frequently mentioned as the official beginning of naturism in Rab, i.e. when the English king Edward VIII stayed there and the Rab authorities allowed him and his wife to take a nude swim in the bay of Kandarola. However it is certain that naturism on the island started long before that. The article "Trade in nakedness", published in the Austrian economic journal "Trend" no. 11/83 reports that the naturist beach in Rab was officially opened as early as at the transition to this century and that 50 beds in the hotels were reserved for naturists.The same article mentions that the firstnaturist beach in Rab was opened personally by Richard Ehrman, the presidentof the International Naturist Federation from Vienna in 1934. Naturism in Rab is also mentionedin the article of the Czech Josef Herman, in 1907 and of professor Günther in 1912, which proves that the Rab people had understood long ago the bright prospects of this movement which, at that time, was a very bold attitude.

The possibility to swim without clothes attracts for a lot of tourists, so that many of them choose to spend their holidays in Rab. While nudists used to be very rare earlier, there are thousands of them nowadays.
 

 Naturism establishes mental and physical balance because you rest in a natural environment, through movement and respect for the fundamental principles of health and nutrition. Full nudity is the main feature of naturism and its most obvious aspect, but not its only one. By shedding clothes, you shed everyday problems and discover a natural way of life. A true relationship is established with the family and other campers. It is only without clothes that one can fully enjoy natural elements - the sun, air, water and ecologically clean environment.Naturism requires constant care for the body, which is why sports are very important - not practiced competitively, but in a family recreational way. Favorite sports are: volleyball, tennis, table tennis, swimming and other water sports.
 There are numerous reasons why Croatia is an endearing tourist destination for naturists. Some will find that mutual affection for its tradition, some in the closeness with nature, which is the basis of naturist philosophy, and some in the tourist infrastructure, which suits the needs of naturists. All of them are thrilled with Croatia.
That naturism, in Croatia, is constantly adapting to suit the needs and life philosophies of its guests is made evident by the rich variety of sports and recreational activities offered. Respecting the naturist orientation towards the protection nature, which is one of the major commitments of tourism in Croatia, Croatian naturist centres are praised for their protection of the environment and some naturist destinations such as Valalta Rovinj, Koversada Vrsar, Ulika Cervar Porat are adorned with the prestigious international symbol of a protected environment the Blue Flag.
Naturist centres accept all guests with the International Naturist Federation (INF) member's card and all families that follow naturist rules. It should be stated that single men without the International Naturist Federation member's card, as a rule are not admitted.
Besides naturist centres and camps with parts assigned to naturists, there are many beaches on the Adriatic that are not especially marked. Make note that although naturism is tolerated, don't be the first naturists on a beach you're not familiar with, especially if it is in the vicinity of a town or village !
